Memorial Cairn Unveiled on 11th November 2012
The cairn commemorating the lives of the five brave airmen who died in a crash in 1942 was officially unveiled in the presence of relatives and over a hundred local residents. After the main ceremony there was a second wreath laid by 100 year old Jackie 'Dinger' Bell who now lives in Edinburgh but who worked on Wellington bombers during WWII.
There are two documents available
giving details of the crash itself. The first is by Colin Chess, a local
historian, and can be viewed here. The second is an article that appeared in a Scotsman publication.
Below is a photograph taken just after the war showing the actual crash site. The allotments on the far side of the canal are now built on as an extension of Colinton Grove.
